Hello! My name is Emily, aka girlwithaskillet. I live in a small town just outside Atlanta, Georgia with my husband, Jacob, and our Basset Hound, Tucker. I’m lucky in that I live close enough to Atlanta to take advantage of the many excellent restaurant choices and shopping opportunities, but far enough away to still be able to see the stars at night when it’s clear out. I grew up on a farm in Alabama, where my Mom and step-dad still raise grass-fed beef and sheep, as well as pastured pigs. Seeing what they do really makes you think about the way we do eat, and the way we should eat. I’m very proud of them, so check them out here if you’re interested. I picked up my love of southern food from my Daddy, who, along with my step-mom, is one of the best comfort food cooks I know. There is nothing like his sweet potato pie, which, if you’re lucky, I’ll share with you one day. Anyway, the short version of this story is this: I grew up with some of the best food there is, and I want to know more. I want to know how to cook everything from chicken stock and pork belly to home-made bread and cauliflower soup. And I want to make a perfect pecan pie that is perfectly set in the middle (do you sense a story there? Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll here about it.) This blog is my way of stepping outside of my comfort zone and making things that intimidate me, or that I may not have had before, or even heard of. Having someone to report back to will hopefully encourage me to keep at it. And I figure if I’m having to learn from all of this, someone else should too.
Now, you may have noticed that a fair number of my posts aren’t about food. Well, I’ve found that with some recent changes in my life, like our new home, I’ve been finding inspiration and excitement in some new activities. I’ve been very interested in home design, since I’ve been decorating a space that I love; I have room for a giant garden, and I really want to incorporate more fresh fruits and veggies into my cooking; I’ve been dipping my toe into some sewing enterprises; all sorts of creative things. With all of this going on, I kept finding things that I desperately wanted to share with you, but I’d hold back because this was, well, a food blog. I finally came to the realization that I really should be telling you about all of these things. Because if they’re getting me inspired to create and learn and do, then what sort of inspiration might I bring to you? So. Here, you will find all sorts of things: recipes, gardening adventures, crafty projects, my attempts to become an amateur seamstress, and always, always, always, photographs. I hope that I can inspire you in the same way that I’ve been inspired by so many others.
Oh! Please keep in touch! I would love to hear from you; leave comments (even criticisms! Really, it helps.) or e-mail me here:
